遠野市は古くから馬産地として栄えてきた歴史があり、馬と人がともに生活する「南部曲がり家（人が暮らす居間から馬屋の様子を見ることができるよう、構造を鉤型にした住居）」をはじめ、馬にまつわる様々な文化を育んできました。

馬力大会では、山中で切り出した木を馬で運搬する「地駄引き」の技術が用いられています。
レースでは、馬が重りを乗せたそりを騎手と共に引き、直線150mのコース上にある２つの障害を乗り越えます。
馬と人が一体となり疾走する姿は迫力があり、まさに勇壮そのものです。

-June-　【Tohoku Horsepower Meet: Home of the Horse – Tono Tournament】Tono City

Tono City has a long and prosperous history of rearing horses.
As such, a variety of unique horse-related cultures have sprung up here, starting with “Nambu Magariya” (L-shaped houses including a stable that was visible from the people’s living space).

At the Horsepower Meet, a method of transporting trees cut upon mountains (using horses) called “Jidabiki” is replicated in this race.
Horses in this race, alongside their horseman, while pulling weighted sleds, compete to be the first to clear a 150m course while overcoming two obstacles.
The combined effort of man and horse sprinting together to win the race is both impressive and truly a thrilling sight to see.
